Editable Spring Word Game – Roll a Flower

By thisreadingmama 14 Comments

It’s ALMOST springtime, although it may not feel or look like it where you live. Our editable spring word game will be just the thing to get you in the spring mood!

Like our snowman sight word game, this one is LOW PREP and requires no cutting! Yay!

Roll and Grow a Flower {Editable Spring Word Game}

This game could be played with 2-4 players. If you have a small group of six, split them into two or three groups.

slip the flower game board in a dry erase pocket

Print a copy of the flower game board, one for each player. Slip each one into a plastic sleeve protector or dry erase pockets. Each player also needs to have a dry erase marker.

type sight words or phonics words on editable word boards

Before printing, type in the words you want your learners to use for the game on the editable page(s). Six editable pages are included so you can differentiate easily. This game works best if the players are all on the same skill level, although it can be adapted for those who aren’t {read below under “Different Word Lists for Players” below}.

I love that you can type sight words OR phonics words. There are 11 spaces for words, so if you’re teaching young learners who don’t have tons of sight words under their belt, you might type some of your words twice on the page. Step-by-step directions are included the file if you’re unsure how to prep the editable pages.

Quick tip: If  you want this activity to be completely NO PREP, just print the word pages without typing in the words {they’ll print blank} and get learners to write their own words on the boards!

add or subtract dice and match to a word on the board

Play is simple. Learners take turns rolling a die, then adding or subtracting the numbers. Once they have an answer, they match it to one of the numbers on the board. For example, if learners roll a 4 and a 6, they could add 4+6 to get 10 or subtract 6-4 to get 2.

crossing off numbers on the roll a flower game board after rolling dice

Learners read the word associated with that number aloud and then “grow” their flower by crossing out that number on their flower board. {Everyone must agree that the word was read correctly before the player moves to the next step of the game.}

erasing numbers off the roll a flower game board
If they roll a total of 4, they read the word and roll again. BUT, if they roll two 6’s for the sum of 12 {there’s no 0, so they can’t subtract 6 from 6}, they have to erase one of the parts of their flower.

The first player to “grow” their entire flower by crossing off all the numbers on the game board is the winner. Learners can all erase the numbers and play again!

Different Word Lists for Players

Sometimes, it’s nice for learners to have different playing partners besides those on their own skill level. If you have guided reading groups already established in your classroom, you might pair 2 students from your “Red Group” with 2 students from your “Blue Group”.

use different word lists to differentiate play

The “Red Group” would have their word list and the “Blue Group” would have their own word list. Players would refer to their own word list as they play each other. And again, each player would need their own flower game board.

    Thanks for Sharing! I’m confused, though, because the numbers and parts do not match. What am I doing wrong?

      You are EXACTLY RIGHT!! I uploaded the wrong file! The correct file is now there when you click to download. I guess this is what happens when I tried to juggle too much this week.

    I love that this is so adaptable to different levels. My first grader can use her word list, and my preK can use it for phonics. I’ll put a letter and have her say the letter and sound it makes.
    I can even use this for my older kids to practice Latin. Write the Latin words in the box and they have to pronounce the word and translate. Or even use a verb they have to conjugate.
    Great resource!

    Love this, but the flower and word pages do NOT print as picture shows. They print with big black squares around each petal (so very hard to see the actual flower and the word spaces). Would have been so cute and useful for first grade.

      It sounds like you’re printing from the preview file of Adobe. Be sure to download it to your computer and then print from that file. If that still doesn’t work, I’ve heard that it means you probably need to update your Adobe program. Hope that helps!
