I was given a free download of these apps in exchange for my honest opinion. This post also contains affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure for more information.
On the first click into Susan’s site Stories and Children, you can clearly see that she knows her stuff when it comes to reading! I love her reading articles, like 8 Tips for Choosing Children’s Books. Her gift of literacy has led her on this super cool journey of writing and illustrating story apps. So far she has written and illustrated seven story apps:
- There’s Something in the Bush, Matilda
- Scaredy Cat
- Lyrebird Park
- Grover Bill and the Geckos
- Farmer Blake and Sneaky Snake
- It’s a BAD Day to Be a FLY!
- Hog and Frog
- with ONE MORE soon-to-be released called Aunt Lou’s Cockatoo
My three oldest kids have greatly enjoyed Susan’s story apps. And I have too…for many reasons:
- The stories are so cute and creative. The story lines really caught my kids attention. Each one of them.
- Many of her stories rhyme, reinforcing that basic skill that young readers need. {The story is not controlled by the rhyme, which could potentially make the story less effective or cheesy. It is sprinkled naturally throughout the text. This is a BIG deal for me!}
- Susan has a way with words, integrating many vocabulary words into her text. I just love her word choices. Words like hullabaloo, skittered, and shimmy!
- They have a “Read Aloud” or “I Read” option, which works perfectly for multiple ages. My PreKinders can follow along the story as it reads to them while my oldest {almost 8} can read the words himself
- She provides background knowledge before each text begins. For example, with Lyrebird Park, Susan explains what a Lyrebird is and what they can do. Do you know what a lyrebird is? I didn’t. 🙂
- She has printable {yes printable} and fun activities for each book. If you don’t want to print them, the kids can do them over and over right on the iPad!
- My absolute favorite part is probably the Guide Notes. In these notes she shows you, as the teacher, how to integrate the story with different content areas, greatly enhancing comprehension of the text!
Probably your favorite part of all this is that Susan is joining me in my 7 Days of School Day Giveaways to giveaway ALL SEVEN story apps to THREE WINNERS! You can enter to win these story apps via the Rafflecopter widget below.

We own 4 mobile devices.:S
I have 2 mobile devices. These books look great!
I am looking for ways to help my niece with her reading. She is 7 and pretty much recognizes her name and the word Acorn only. She can recognize individual letters to some extent. I will be helping her for the next year at least. My philosophy is this: if what was being done before was not working, then try something new. So, I offered to home-school her since my sister has her own disabilities and I am home schooling already :).I am interested in seeing how these story apps etc work and if they would help my niece. i KNOW she can do it, she just needs the right trigger/type that will work best with her educational needs. i hope I can win this so i can help her overcome the challenges she faces as a special needs child.
