Cut & Paste Multisyllable Word Sorts

Just because a learner can read single-syllable words doesn’t automatically mean they’ll know how to apply those skills to longer words. Readers, especially struggling readers, need explicit teaching with recognizing and reading multisyllable words.

These free multisyllable word sorts are a hands-on way to get kids reading and recognizing words with two, three, or four syllables.

One thing to remember with longer words is that every syllable has a vowel sound. {Note: The number of vowels doesn’t always equal the number of syllables. For example, breathe has three vowels, but only one syllable.} With this in mind, teach learners to underline or highlight the vowels in the words. This gives them a big clue as to how many syllables there may be. At the very least, it gives them a starting point for counting syllables!

Afterward, have learners read each word then sort & glue* them based on how many syllables each word has.

Each word sort has an extra word added into the mix that doesn’t fit into the sort. Learners can glue that word onto the back or toss it in the trash.

*Library Members: You’ll find a “read & write” version of these sorts in The Library.

As a special needs assistant in a primary school, I really appreciate your freebies. I am also a Dyslexia tutor for young children and adults.
I use a huge variety of resources in order to individualise my teachings for each child. Thanks very much,
    Helen
