Cut & Paste Affix Syllable Sorts
Readers, especially struggling readers, need explicit teaching with recognizing and reading affixes.
There are two kinds of affixes. First, there are prefixes, which are word parts added to the beginning of a word which change its meaning, like un in unhappy. Second, there are suffixes, which are word parts added to the end of a word which also change its meaning, like ful in careful.
These free affix syllable sorts are a hands-on way to get kids reading and recognizing affixes and counting syllables based on vowel sounds.
Once learners are familiar with affixes, such as these, they can see how the syllable count would apply to a word such as prewashing, in which the two affixes pre and ing each add one extra syllable to the entire word: pre – wash – ing.
Every syllable has a vowel sound, so learners should first underline or highlight the vowels in the affixes.
Afterward learners have read each affix, learners should sort & glue* them based on how many syllables each one has.
Each affix syllable sort has an extra affix added into the mix! For example, on the prefix sort, an extra suffix has been added. This provides an extra challenge to learners of recognizing the difference between prefixes and suffixes.
