Teaching comprehension reading strategies is a GREAT way to help learners make meaning of text. Comprehension can be a more abstract activity, requiring lots of skill sets at once. It is helpful, especially for struggling readers, to separate the comprehension skills and break them down into meaningful steps.

Picture Books for Teaching Comprehension Reading Strategies
When we teach comprehension reading strategies, we want to apply them to real reading. When paired carefully, picture books make the perfect venue for doing this, even with older readers.
Applying the strategies we’re teaching with our learners provides guided practice, which can help them see the value of the strategies. Guiding them as we apply the skills with real books also helps them to think about reading strategies in a more flexible way, empowering them to transfer the strategies with the books they are reading independently.
If you’re in search of some picture books that fit each comprehension strategy, I’ve got you covered! You’ll find my most recommended books for modeling comprehension strategies.
At the request of readers, I’ve made them into printable comprehension book lists that you can take along with you on your trips to the library or the bookstore.
