Compound Word Puzzles
Ever had a reader see a big word and freeze up? Often, readers think the word is too hard to figure out. Studying compound words is a great way to help readers see that many larger words are just little words that they already know put together. And this can help readers bridge the gap between those familiar single syllable words to words with more than one syllable.
While there are a few different kinds of compound words, the ones I’ve been doing with my rising 2nd grader are closed compound words. At its simplest definition, a compound word is created when you take two words that have separate meanings (like butter and fly) and you combine them to form a new word with a new meaning (butterfly).
We’ve been working our way through the 6 syllable types, so I thought it would be fun to also work in some compound word practice. And when you find cute clip art, it makes it super fun to prep the activity!
I just printed off the compound word puzzles, cut them out, and mixed them up. He read each separate word and then matched up the correct compound word.
The puzzles come in full color or partial color. The popsicle’s colors can make them self-checking for learners, which makes them perfect for individual work or a learning center!
A great extension is to brainstorm a list of more compound words together {I personally love the list at the end of Words Their Way}. Learners can use this list to create their own compound word puzzles!
They can trade them with others or cut apart and work their own.
