Christmas Picture Writing Prompts

Oh no! What happened to Santa? It’s up to your writers to decide!

One of my daughter’s favorite IEW units is writing from pictures. Since she has a big imagination as a writer, she really has enjoyed creating her own stories based on picture prompts.

So, I thought I’d create a few of my own and mix in some silly Christmas fun with this free pack of Santa Stories.

Christmas Picture Writing Prompts Example - Santa Stories - This Reading Mama

EIGHT different Santa Story pages are included in this pack. On each prompt page, you’ll find a black/white image of Santa doing something silly like getting stuck in a chimney, eating too many cookies, or being left behind by his reindeer. {Poor Santa.}

  • Encourage your learners to think about what comes before and/or after the picture on the page. {I would HIGHLY encourage you to MODEL this skill with your learners before expecting them to do it independently.}
  • They can then draw or jot words or phrases in the two empty boxes towards the top of the page.
  • Once they know how their story will go, learners can write their “Santa Stories.”
  • If you want the pages to be their final copy, encourage them to draft their story on other paper first and save their final copy for this paper.

    I want more!!! These were the most fantastic writing assignment I could have even imagined. My second graders wrote so much and were so creative. Do you have others like this?
