This caterpillar sight words activity was such a fun way to practice sight words and I didn’t have to buy or print a thing!

100 Fun & Easy Learning Games for Kids
Have you ever found a new book and instantly, you had a connection? It was as if the authors completely read your mind. That’s how I feel about 100 Fun & Easy Learning Games for Kids by Amanda Boyarshinov and Kim Vij. Every time I open it, I seriously have one of those a-ha! moments.
My three favorite things about this book are
1- they share learning games that are fun and hands-on {great for any learner, but especially reluctant / struggling learners},
2- you don’t have to buy anything new to do the activities {which is perfect if you don’t have room to store tons of learning materials}, and
3- each learning activity has variations so you can adapt it to your learners {a MUST in my book!}.
Caterpillar Sight Words
I have permission to share my excitement with you today by showing just one of the activities from the book that I’ve used with my Kindergartner this past week. {This is actually one of the variations of another awesome learning game in the book.}
To prep the caterpillar sight words, I didn’t have to buy a thing! I used scrap construction paper, cut into strips, and bottle cap letters, which we have kept for years as a cheap teaching tool.
I traced the caterpillar bodies with the bottle caps and put wrote letters to sight words from Learn to Read. I then placed all the bottle caps needed in an empty container, which we keep on-hand in a bin. {Psst! If you want to save time on prep work, kids can trace the bottle caps themselves and make their own caterpillar sight words!}
First, my daughter read the caterpillar sight words she was going to spell.
Then, she spelled each word with bottle caps. I requested that she go in order to reinforce the spelling of each word, but you can do it out of order if you’d like, too.
And it’s that easy!
