My own first grader was struggling with mentally adding 10 to numbers, so I created these pages to help her organize the numbers by their value {hundreds, tens, ones} so she could visually see how adding or subtracting 10 changes a number.
If your learner is still struggling, a teacher tip is to add base ten blocks to your lesson so learners can manipulate adding and subtracting 10 from a number. This makes this activity multi-sensory, engaging learners’ ears, eyes. Having the blocks also makes an abstract math concept more concrete.
Thinking and Talking about Math
After solving the math problems, learners are encouraged to think and share verbally how adding or subtracting 10 changes the number. Which digit does it change? Why is that?
I love this step, and as tempting as it may be, do not skip it!
This is when your learner gets to “be the teacher” to explain WHY adding and subtracting 10 works the way it does.
This is KEY because learners might understand the “what” or even the “how” with a math concept, but they may not fully grasp the “why.” And the “why” is what helps them move from a basic understanding to a deeper understanding that they can apply. Application is KEY!
Note: Although a couple of operations are incorrect in the image of this pack on the Adding/Subtracting 10 pages, the actual worksheets in the PDF are correct.
