You Can Make Spelling FUN

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

I already know what many of you might be thinking. I can make spelling fun?!? I know your thoughts because over the years, I’ve spoken with many parents and teachers about this subject. The very mention of spelling and here come the groans and attitudes from the students…and sometimes the teachers/parents, too!

Several parents I’ve spoken with have gone so far as to say, “There are just too many exceptions for me to even worry about teaching spelling to my child.” While others say it just doesn’t matter anymore with spell check. But I highly disagree!

Taking the time to work on spelling can support readers by helping to increase reading fluency, which ultimately improves reading comprehension. Yes, please!

Spelling instruction simply takes those common sight words and phonics patterns needed for reading and slows them down enough so that kids can understand how they work. Spelling instruction is SO worth it… and I’m excited to tell you that you CAN make spelling FUN!

You Can Make Spelling FUN!

As I mention in my ebook, Teaching Kids to Spell, kids need spelling instruction on their developmental level {not too hard, not too easy, but just right}. Kids also need to see how words can be connected by spelling patterns, instead of giving them a list of completely non-related spelling words and expecting them to rely on rote memory.

And while I ADORE Words Their Way and All About Spelling, I will be the first to admit that the word sorts and routines can sometimes become…well, routine. I can be hard to shake it up and think out of the box.

That’s when we have to mix in a little spice to make spelling FUN!

Printable Spelling Activities and Games by Becky Spence of This Reading Mama

That was my exact goal was when writing my newest ebook, Printable Spelling Activities and Games! Included in this 700+ page book are printable activities and games for spelling sight words as well as phonics words that will help make your spelling instruction more fun {for you and your students}.

While my primary audience is K-3rd grade educators {at school and at home}, children who are younger or older may also benefit, depending on where they are developmentally.

What’s Inside?

I had SO much fun creating all the spelling activities in this printable ebook! You’ll find spelling games similar to the traditional games like Old Maid, Tic-Tac-Toe, or Memory Match, newer spelling games, plenty of printable activity mats and games for building and writing words, and printable resources to help kids become better spellers. If you’d like to see more, you can see a 30-page sample pack in my shop!

And many of the activities can work for sight words AND phonics words. Just switch out the word cards included, mix and match, and you’ve got spelling activities and games that can last all year!
