Back to School Word Bump - a free printable spelling game | This Reading Mama

We’re back to school…well, really we aren’t quite yet. But we have been doing a few activities here and there to get me the kids warmed up to the idea. 🙂 This week, we played our FREE Back to School Word Bump!

If you’re not familiar with Word Bump!, it’s a free printable spelling game that is HIGHLY adaptable for any student who is ready to spell words. It works in the classroom or at home. You can read about or download any of our Word Bump! games HERE. We also have a generic Letter/Word Bump! download on for likers of This Reading Mama’s Facebook page.

How to Play Word Bump!

  • Both players share this printable spelling game board. Slip it into a plastic sleeve protector or laminate.
  • Each player selects a dry erase marker (each needs a different color) and their own spelling word list, from the last page of the free download. You can use sight words or phonics words.

roll the dice for the spelling game

  • Players take turns rolling the dice. {There are game boards for 1 die, 2 dice and 3 dice.} We added a little challenge this time by using some number word dice that I bought at a local teacher store years ago.

add the number and write spelling words

  • Add up the numbers, find the number on the game board, and write a spelling word from your own list in the box {both players can have their own separate spelling list, on their own spelling level}.

erase the other players spelling word and write yours

  • If you roll the same number later in the game, you can erase the other player’s word and write yours in its place!
  • The person who has the most of their color spelling word wins {either when a timer goes off or when the entire board is filled up}!
