Reading the Alphabet ET Word Family
Here are just a few shots of our ET Word Family Week:
The ET Family emergent reader is called Pet to the Vet and introduces five ET family words, while reviewing all of the sight words from Lessons 21-25.
NJoy was upset that I printed off the color version for him, but read it anyway. By the end of the week, he had requested to color the pictures so many times that I caved in and printed off the black and white version for him!
For the first part of the week, I always try to do different activities that will help him play with and interact with the ET word families, like these ET puzzles
and ET Pocket Chart Match
This week, we did something a little different with ET Bottle cap spelling, which he enjoyed.
He closed his eyes and I spelled the word incorrectly {messing up one of the letters}
He opened his eyes, read the word I spelled and then corrected it. He tried doing it for me and it was hilarious to watch!
Once he feels comfortable with the ET words, that’s when I introduce him to the reader. We located all the ET words in the reader first. This way, I gave him the phonics background knowledge and support he needed to make his reading time for successful.
There are a few activities included to review sight words. He was a bit hesitant to try the sight word search because I made it a little harder. But once he found the first word, he realized he could do it “by myself, mommy.”
I had the cookie letters out for MBug this week and he wanted to use them to spell his sight words. There weren’t enough letters to spell every word, so we got creative and turned the i upside-down to make an l. 😉
He really loved the Pet Sums activity!
I got out these cool, little dice spinners, purchased at the $1 store years ago, and our transparent counters.
He spun the tops, counted the dots, and covered the number.
He also used his fingers quite a lot. It’s his new fascination. To add up numbers on his fingers. Oh, the look of concentration…I love it!

I love the idea of scrambling the word! I do have him unscramble his spelling word on paper, but your approach looks like a lot of fun. I’ll have to give it a try – thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Erin. 🙂

Thank you for your encouraging comment. 🙂
I got it to work! Than you so much for providing these free!
