Simple Reading Response Journal Questions

What is a reading response journal? It’s exactly what it sounds like, really. Learners use a simple notebook to write down their responses and reactions to what they read.

We’re not talking complicated book projects that require a trip to the craft store. We’re talking simple questions to get kids thinking and reacting to what they’ve read.

The only supplies you need are a book of choice, a notebook, and a pencil to get started. Oh, and reading response journal questions are a must, too!

The kinds of response questions can make or break a response journal.

  • We want questions that dive deeper and get kids thinking, not just recalling basic facts. After all, reading equals thinking.
  • We want questions that are “evergreen”. These are questions that work no matter what book or article kids read.
  • We want questions help learners get in a routine. If we can keep the same questions, readers become familiar with what we want them to be thinking about as they read. They also know what we expect after they read. This builds independence and confidence, which is especially important for struggling readers!

To keep it simple, it works best to print off your questions, laminate them, and just tape or glue them to the front of the notebook. This way, readers always know where they are and what’s expected.

{This is exactly what my oldest son has done this past school year. I borrowed these questions from my son’s school, with permission.}
