These free and simple Poetry Copywork Pages are an effective way to integrate poetry and comprehension right into your curriculum.
I added these into our mix since we do a monthly “poetry tea time” with another homeschool family. Because you can use poetry to teach so many things skills, it’s a great fit, even if you don’t hold monthly tea times. 🙂

Poetry Copywork Pages
In the free download, I’ve included TWO poetry copywork pages. One is for younger children and one is for older learners. BOTH freebies encourage learners to write the name of the poem/author and then copy the poem in their BEST handwriting.
Handwriting practice and having a good writing model are my two favorite uses of copywork. {I DO NOT count this as our writing curriculum, though. We follow a Writing Workshop model for that.}
The first page in the free pack is great for learners who are end of Kindergarten to about 1st/2nd grade. It includes a place for kids to write the title, the author, copy the poem, and then draw their most vivid mental image(s) from the poem.
I always ask learners to explain their pictures and then show evidence from the poem. I might ask something like, “What words did the poet use to help you visualize that?”
The second poetry copywork page is meant for older learners {possibly 3rd grade through middle school.}
Like the page for younger kids, this page also asks kids to write the title, author, copy the poem, and draw their vivid images.
It includes an extra spot for figurative language. In the chart, learners are asked to list what the text actually says, what it means, and the type of figurative language is it such as a simile, a metaphor, or personification.
