What is Morphology?

As a quick review, morphology is the study of word parts and their meanings. In learning how to read and write, our learners need to understand that letters and letter chunks don’t just carry sounds; they carry meanings, too.

For example, a simple chunk like un means not and an s at the end of a word can tell our readers that the word is plural.

You can read even more about how to apply Morphology in Structured Literacy.

One interactive way to work on morphology is by using prefixes, root words/base words, and suffixes to build words with the morphemes.

Morphology Pocket Chart Cards

That’s just what these morphology cards are designed to do!

This free pack includes 40 prefixes, 40 root words, and 40 suffixes. Each card comes in color and blackline as well as in two fonts: a printed font and a typewriter font. EDITABLE word cards are also included so you can type in your own prefixes, root words/base words, or suffixes.

Use the cards to build and change out morphemes {word parts} to create new words. For example, discovered can be become recovered when the prefix is changed or discovery if the suffix is changed. During these changes, you can talk about how the word meaning changes just by changing one morpheme.

In some cases, spellings will even change, which allows you to remind students of rules for adding suffixes to words.

Don’t have a pocket chart? No worries! You can use them on a table top, on the floor, or stick a magnet on the back so they’ll stick to your magnetic board.
