More Long Vowel Game Boards
These long vowel games are PERFECT for reviewing phonics skills at home or in the classroom! They can be played with one player or with two. And the best part is they are hands-on AND low-prep. Woohoo! The only amount of prep time you may need is grabbing a teaching manipulative from your stash, like the ones we use {see below}.
These long vowel game boards cover these common long vowel patterns:
- ai, ay
- ee, ee
- igh
- oa, ow
- ew
The pack includes TWO LEVELS of learning. There are full directions on the download. All our low-prep games in this series are played in a similar way. For a more of a full tutorial, please see our Beginning Sounds Games.
Level 1 involves tossing manipulative on the board, identifying the long vowel pattern in the word, and moving a marker as the bird “flies” to the tree.
Kids may also like to use Do-a-Dot paint markers to play, but I will warn that the game board cannot be re-used when these are used.
Level 2 takes the game to a more challenging level. Instead of just identifying the vowel pattern, kids have to spell the words on their game boards. We used pencil, but you could also slip your game board into a plastic sleeve protector and use dry erase markers, like I show in our Short Vowel Game Boards.

Hi Becky. Thank you so much for your long vowel game boards, my child loves learning through play as they all do. I’m just having a problem printing one of your freebies for your ‘low prep long vowel board games’ for the ai, ay, oa etc sounds, the one with 2 levels of flying the bird to the tree and then spelling the word themselves. When you click on the link to download it takes you to the ‘long vowel game boards’ but with CVCe patterns instead. Any chance you can give me a hand with this. Thanks very much!
It’s been fixed! Thank you for letting me know. 🙂
