Missing Addends Recording Page {FREE Printable}

By thisreadingmama 2 Comments

It’s been review time over the last couple of weeks for ALuv {currently at the end of 1st grade}. One of the activities I wanted to drive home in as many ways as I could was the relationship between addition and subtraction. I had noticed that adding was going well, but when he was asked to subtract, he didn’t seem to be making the connection between the two.

Hands-on Learning About Missing Addends

So I got out our counting bears/cups, dry erase board, and created a missing addends recording sheet {free download link at the end of this post}. While we used our counting bears/cups, you could do this same activity with any small manipulative and drinking cup.

I set up the missing addends problem like this:

He counted the bears seen and figured out the missing number of bears under the cup {drawing dots on the cup} to equal the sum.  Then, we related it to subtraction by completing the subtraction number sentence underneath.

I was amazed at how quickly he caught on and how much he’s applied this concept since we did this activity, making subtraction problems easier for him! Yay!
