Letter W Books

The letter w words featured in these books are: wishy, wash(y), weekend, Wendell, wheels, wild, week, winter, wonderland, waiting, wings, went, walking, whistle, and Willie. Whew! That’s a lot of w words!

I must confess as cute as this book is, Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm is not my favorite Mrs. Wishy-Washy book. The original Mrs. Wishy-Washy will forever hold a place in my heart from my year of teaching Kindergarten. Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm has harder vocabulary {and the word hate a few times}, but the story line is adorable. All kids will fall in love with the rosy-cheeked Mrs. Wishy-Washy.

A Weekend with Wendell by Kevin Henkes is one that I would recommend most for older preschoolers into Kindergarten because of the length and content. Kevin Henkes books are fantastic for helping kids make connections and A Weekend with Wendell is no exception. When Wendell comes to visit Sophie, he drives her crazy. She is ready for him to just go home. But when it’s time to leave, Sophie has a change of heart.

Between my 3 year old, 5 year old, and 6 year old, I think I’ve read Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash about fifty times in the last few months. This rhyming book is totally hysterical and keeps my kids in stitches. Not only does she hang up the wash, but a turkey, the dog, the phone, false teeth and even herself. Such a funny, little story!

Oh my. The Wheels on the Bus. If I had even a penny for every time I’ve sung this song or read this book, I’d be filthy rich! Seriously. And I have to admit, it’s a brilliant song that makes for a great read aloud, too! We have also greatly enjoyed the Raffi version on CD, along with all his other fantastic songs for toddlers and preschoolers.

Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is such a classic. I can remember reading it as a child. I have been a little reserved introducing too soon to my own children, just because of some of the “Wild Things” are a little on the scary side, but that’s a personal choice. I typically wait until my kids are 5 years old or I know that they can better decipher what’s real and what’s pretend.

Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward is about a fun-loving, mischief making cat named Cookie. Each day of the week, Cookie gets into one mischief after another. If you have a family cat {and even if you don’t}, your kids will love this book. I also think it’s a FANTASTIC way to sneak in learning the days of the week!

Speaking of the days of the week, Today is Monday by Eric Carle, is another fun book that teaches the days of the week. You can sing the silly song with your child. I have to admit that this book does not feature a letter w word unless you count Wednesday, but I picked it because it features the days of the week. The song is included in the back of the book, but this is a cute YouTube video that features the song.

Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins is such a BRILLIANT book that teaches the use of prepositions in such a clever way. Rosie goes on a simple walk to stretch her legs, but the pictures tell such a fantastic story that will get kids giggling. That poor fox…

Winter Wonderland by Jill Esbaum is one of my favorite read alouds for winter {It goes great with our Pre-K/K Winter Pack, too!}. This small series by National Geographic Kids is one that I HIGHLY recommend for young children. The photographs are amazing, the text has rich vocabulary, but isn’t too long for little listeners. Other books in this series we own and enjoy are: A Tree for All Seasons, Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie, Apples for Everyone, Pilgrims of Plymouth, Everything Spring & Insects.

A great story to read during the spring time when you’re studying creepy-crawly things, Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert is a rhyming book with VIBRANT colors that tells of the butterfly life cycle. The pages also remind me of an Eric Carle book the way they are various sizes throughout. There’s also a couple of visual resource pages at the end, if your child wants to explore more.

I Went Walking by Sue Williams is definitely a favorite of mine because of its rhyme, cute illustrations, introduction to helping kids make predictions and the fun predictable text, similar to Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Such a great book for beginning readers, too!

Even thought it’s definitely not a new book, Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats {author of The Snowy Day} is newer to our family. Peter wants to whistle so badly for his dog, Willie, so badly. He blows and blows, but nothing comes out. He is determined that he will whistle for his dog. Through practice and perseverance, “out came a real whistle”! Such a great book for those kids who tend to have a perfectionist mindset that they have to get it right the first time.
