What is the Jesse Tree?

The Jesse Tree tradition has been around for hundreds of years. It is based on Isaiah 11:1, in which Jesus is referred to as the Shoot growing from the stump of Jesse, King David’s father.

To use the Jesse Tree during the Advent season, you start on December 1st with the Old Testament and work your way up to Jesus’ birth on December 25. Each day, you also hang an ornament on the tree that represents the day. These could be ornaments you’ve made with your children out of different mediums such as clay or paper.

While you certainly can incorporate the ornaments on your regular Christmas tree, our family has always had a smaller Christmas tree dedicated as our Jesse Tree.

Grab the Advent Jesse Tree devotional for children and adults. We’ve used it most years that we’ve done the Jesse Tree.
