FREE CVC Fluency Games
Did you know that fluent reading is one of the key components to unlocking comprehension? It’s true!
It can be very difficult for a young {or struggling} reader’s brain to unlock the meaning of the text if their brains must be so focused on what the letters or words are. If you play a musical instrument, you know that it’s a lot like asking a musician to sight read a piece for the first time AND include phrases and expression.
That’s why it’s important to develop reading fluency with re-readings. That’s where these NO PREP games can help!
These fluency games are different than your typical game board, though.
Usually, learners roll a die, move their marker, then read just the one word they landed on. Not with these boards!
Instead, learners will roll a die, move their marker, then read all the spaces from “Start” to the space they landed on. And if you feel your learners are up for a challenge, have them start on the space they landed on and read each word back to “Start.”
Did you notice the subtle difference? Because learners are reading and blending the sounds in the CVC words repeatedly throughout the entire game, they are getting some good fluency practice in!

Hi Becky,
I’m a big fan of your materials. They are great! Question though about this game; why have you chosen to move from right to left? My 5 year old granddaughter has learned to read with many of your methods. However, she is still occasionally reading a word from right to left as she sounds it out. We call this havin a backwords day. It’s not consistent and I belief it will work itself out this year. I’d very much like to use this game with her( I used to tutor fluency) but I’m worried it might confuse her because if the direction. I’d love your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Hi Angi,
I understand your concern, but no matter how I orient the games in the format I have, one row will be moving from right to left. Even the ones that start moving left to right on the top row will go from right to left on the next jot over. Ugh. I thought about this, too, but am not sure how to fix it.

Thanks Becky! We will give it a try.
