Color the Chunk – Short e Word Families
When learners can sound through CVC words like this p-e-t, introducing word families is a great way to help them chunk and read new words.
These color the chunk pages are a fun way to give it a go! These short e word family pages include -et, -ed, -en, -ell, -est, & -ent.
Learners find the short e word family chunk in each word, color it in, and use that chunk to read the words. There are two levels of color the chunk pages included.
With Level 1, learners color the word family chunk, then use that chunk to help them read the words. Below the line are words with blends and digraphs. Be ready to support your learners if they need extra help with these.
Level 2 is more of a challenge. The top has CVC short e word family words and the bottom has harder words with blends & digraphs, similar to level 1. But Level 2 also include nonsense words. Learners not only color in the word family chunks, but they have to tell which words are real and which are nonsense words. This adds a bit of comprehension into the mix.
