If you’ve followed my blog for very long, you know that I’m a fan of helping kids learn to read and spell by chunk or analogy. That’s what my whole Color the Chunk Phonics pages are about.
So when my favorite season came around this year, I decided it was time to do some chunk spelling with pumpkins. {I plan on using these this week with my own 1st grader and 3rd grader.}
This is SUPER simple to set up because your learners do all the work. All you need to do is print {and maybe help with spelling.}
Chunk Spelling Pumpkin Game
1. Print off the pages you’d like for your learners to work on. You might just print one or two to start with. In the pack, you’ll find short vowel CVC words, short vowel CCVC/CVCC words, bossy r words, long CVCe words, vowel teams, and diphthongs.
2. Ask learners to trace the word provided, and then spell a word that rhymes with it by using the ending chunk to help them spell.
For example, the -at chunk from chat is used to help learners spell that. {Some learners may need help, especially with the long vowel words because those spellings can be a bit ambiguous.} A spelling dictionary can be helpful, too.
3. Learners then cut out their cards to play memory match with their own cards (or with a partner). This gives learners practice READING the words they just spelled, which is important especially for struggling readers.
