Charlotte’s Web: Final Book Club Meeting

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

We did it!  We got through the entire book BEFORE the summer ended.  Whew.  For a few weeks, I seriously wondered if it would be possible!  If you’d like to see all of the post from our meetings, you can see them here.

Here are some shots from our final meeting:

using pictures to retell storyWhile the younger siblings all played, the older kiddos gathered in our schoolroom.  I paired up students and gave them about 10 minutes to look back through the entire book at all the pictures; starting at the beginning.  With each picture, I challenged them to BRIEFLY share with one another what was happening; what was that picture all about. (Not the tiny details, just the general gist.)

C is for Comprehension

The goal of the organizer is to fill in every letter of the alphabet on the chart with a word that pertains to the book in some way.  I made sure to ask what their words had to do with the book to take it a step deeper.

Then, it was movie time! We watched the 2006 version.  The kiddos (especially the younger siblings) grew weary of watching about halfway through and were up asking when it would be lunch time.  So, we stopped and ate.

spider snack with Rice KrispiesWe made some Rice Krispy spiders for our “craft” and dessert.  SO simple!  Just make a batch of Rice Krispies like normal, then scoop them out with a cookie scoop onto pieces of wax paper.  Add m&m eyes and pretzel sticks for the eight legs.

We decided that we’d save the rest of the movie for a later time.  One of our moms actually bought all the moms the 2006 movie!

comparing movie and book for Charlotte's WebI was able to gather the older kids and we briefly filled out this Venn Diagram, highlighting the similarities and differences between the book and the movie (the 1/2 that we’d seen together).
