This Reading Mama

A Week of Review

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

I was very ambitious before NSis came.  I created a folder full of things for ALuv to do every day for school; even things to do while I was still in the hospital.  I also adapted an idea I found online for NJoy to work on.  Did any of it happen?  Two days of it…I guess I forgot how sleep deprivation affects me.

But this past week, I actually had ALuv do all the things I had prepared for him before NSis came.  A week of total review.  Nothing new…all review.  And you know what?  I didn’t feel an ounce of guilt because review is actually a very good thing for learners.  It gives them time to apply their knowledge in new or different way, giving them a deeper understanding of the concept.

So, what did he do?  Here’s the run down…

LITERACY

ALuv and I played various games with his current sight words (his favorite? Roll & Write Sight Words)

He used Starfall.com’s Level 1 Reading and Writing Journal–this review sight words, short vowels, and has writing prompts. (My edition is from 2002 and I found it about two weeks before NSis came-a welcome surprise!  What I have may very well be different than what they sell now.)

Each day, he had 10-15 minutes of “silent” reading.  He read to NJoy and MBug or by himself.  He also had the freedom to choose books from his independent bin or books that I read aloud this week.

MATH

I have a math workbook that I hardly ever use…one that was given to me about 2 years ago.  I went through it and pulled out review pages that he could do independently.

EXTRAS

ALuv did the same crafts that NJoy did this week in relation to our rain/rainbow theme.

One more thing I created before NSis came was a three-ring binder with the plastic sleeve protectors in it.  I went through all of ALuv’s Puzzle Buzz magazines and tore out mazes, dot-to-dots, etc. and placed them in the folder for him to do some “fun” writing.  I don’t know why I never thought to do that before.  The best part is that I was able to throw away the rest of the magazines, which had already been used…saving some space is always a plus!

So, there you have it–a week of review.  I guess my pre-NSis ambition paid off after all.  It sure made getting back into the swing of things A WHOLE LOT easier.

Thank you for joining This Reading Mama on a literacy journey!
