Last week, ALuv and I worked through an a_e word sort from Words Their Way. We also incorporated some short/long a word family games to go with it.
And we created more poetry -word family style. Yesterday, I posted about our sight word poetry and today I wanted to share the poetry ALuv created with the -ake word family.
First, we used our pocket chart to create real and silly words by adding different onsets to the -ake rime.
I recorded our words on chart paper (yes, that’s MBug’s art work-if there’s paper handy, she goes to town).
Then, I modeled for him how to create a silly rhyming poem, using a bunch of -ake words from our list.
We created a few more orally together (because I wanted him to see how flexible this could be) and then I set him free to try it out.
then typed it up (at the beginning of this week) and illustrated it. Just a side note, he still despises drawing, so I asked him what pictures he could include with his poem. As he told me, I sketched them out quickly so he could “copy” them. This worked well.
He named his title after Froggy Bakes a Cake, a funny book we read to go with the -ake rime.
This was a great way to incorporate blending onsets and rimes, reading and spelling by analogy, word processing; not to mention having fun making up silly rhymes!
