Sight Word Poetry

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

When ALuv was younger and began learning sight words, we hand- crafted many predictable readers together.

Here are a couple examples of ones we made:

sight words-I and see

sight words-my and is

Now that he’s reading quite a few more words, I thought it would be his turn to do the composing.  One of his new sight words recently was laugh.

1. I asked him to tell me some things that made him laugh.

2. He brainstormed them and I jotted them down.

3. After he used the ideas from his brainstorm and started writing his sloppy copy, I suggested that he could use his composition to make a non-rhyming poem.

4. He typed it up on the computer.  Once it was typed, I asked him what the title could be.  So, we worked in a small lesson on main idea: What is this poem all about and what title could you give it to show that?

5. We printed out his masterpiece and he decorated it a bit and hung it up for all to see.

After we were finished, it got me thinking that this idea is the “big kid” version of the little emergent readers we used to create together.  But, now he’s the author.  And this idea could also be adapted and used again with another new sight word.

My plan is the keep these poems in a notebook so he can go back and read them over and over again (a great way to build fluency as a reader and confidence as a writer: a win-win if you ask me!).
