The Struggling Reader- Review and Giveaway | This Reading Mama

A couple of years ago, I attended a homeschool convention and was disappointed at a few of the vendors’ products on teaching reading {and writing}. Their “research-based” theories and practices were anything BUT based on solid reading research.  I left feeling frustrated and even wrote a post about it.  So when I recently attending a Teach Them Diligently conference, I was a bit leery of what I might find. {Just keepin’ it real, here.}

As I walked around the vendor hall, The Struggling Reader booth really grabbed by attention, since struggling readers are such a passion of mine. I made my way over to critique browse their materials and listen in as they conversed with parents of struggling readers.  I was so encouraged by their products and what they had to say about teaching reading.  Later that weekend, I had the opportunity to sit down with William and hear his heart about his business {which he calls “ministry”-awesome!}. We also talked the language of reading and reading research {since he and Kristen both have graduate degrees in reading}, which would probably have bored most of you. 🙂 I was highly impressed by their research, their knowledge, and their product!

Today, I am over the moon excited to tell you about their product AND OFFER ONE SET AS A GIVEAWAY!

Five Skill Sets Needed for Reading

Reading is a complex skill.  There are many things that have to happen in a person’s brain for reading to “work”.  If one of these things isn’t clicking with the reader, reading can become a frustration for both the child and the teacher!   So much of what happens as a reader reads is silent {it happens in the brain}, so finding the root of the problem can be hard.  The Struggling Reader breaks down reading into five sub-categories, all of which are needed for a reading:

  1. phonemic awareness– an awareness of sounds in words
  2. phonics– connecting the sounds to the written letters
  3. sight words– high frequency, common words that readers need to know by sight
  4. fluency– can the child read like he’s talking
  5. comprehension– understanding or thinking about what you’re reading

Finding the Root of the Problem

The Struggling Reader is designed to help you locate the area(s) in which your struggling reader needs specific reading instruction.  This is very important because struggling readers {really, all readers} need to be taught in their “instructional zone” or developmental level.  Too many times, struggling readers are reading texts and doing literacy activities that are over their head.  This actually hinders their progress because a– they can’t read the text/do the activities which leads to b-lack of motivation to even try.

The Struggling Reader Assessments {Giveaway}

The way that The Struggling Reader helps you locate strengths and weaknesses is through a series of assessments for each of the five areas mentioned above.  The testing guides walk you through each step, so you don’t need an M.Ed. in Reading to know how to administer and “grade” these assessments. Through these assessments, you are given a clear window to what your child does and does not understand about phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, fluency, and comprehension.  This is EXACTLY what I did as a private reading tutor.  In order to tutor the child on his specific level, I first had to assess the child in all of these areas.

Multi-Sensory Activities for Each Skill Set in Reading

Here comes the cool part: Not only does The Struggling Reader have assessment books to help you zone in on where your child needs work, they also have resource books to help you teach your child in his area of weakness using his five senses {research based off of Dr. Samuel Orton and Dr. Anna Gillingham}.  By the way, this way of teaching isn’t just for struggling readers. ANY reader can benefit from learning to read in this manner.  {I’ll be sharing a few activities from their activity books this week in my 5 Days of Multi-Sensory Activities for Teaching Reading…coming tomorrow!}

Once you’ve assessed your child and you know their areas of strengths and weaknesses, there are these amazing activity books FILLED with reading ideas you can use with your child {plus four sets of flashcards}.  And there’s no need to guess which activity you need to do.  They’ve done this for you.  Once you have your “scores” from your assessments, you can cross-reference this with the activities.  In other words, the activities listed for each of the five areas of reading are clearly marked to show you which ones your child could benefit from the most.

I could literally go on and on about these activities, but here are a few things I love:

  • they are fun and hands-on {many are games}
  • they can be adapted for a school setting, tutoring setting, or homeschool setting {*see info regarding legal use at end of post}
  • they do not require you to buy lots of materials to administer them
  • they are clearly marked, letting you know how they fit into multi-sensory teaching
  • they are based off of best reading practices and reading research {these are tried and true reading practices that reading teachers and reading researcher highly recommend}
  • they are developmentally appropriate {for ages PreK through 8th grade}

    This looks great for my second child. My oldest seemed to figure out reading so easily it was surprising. This, unfortunately is not the case with my little girl. We’ve tried several different approaches and this program looks as though it may be a good solution for a strong foundation in reading. : )

    I attended a session from Kristen at our state homeschool convention a couple of years ago, and her advice is seriously STILL repeating in my head. (And that’s a very good thing!) I actually really wish I could consult with her now that I know a little more about my son’s reading abilities (he has multiple special needs).

    This would be a wonderful addition to our homeschool. My six year old is so struggling with putting sentences together. He pretty much shuts down when I ask him to read.:( I read to him daily for more then an hour thru out the day and he still has no interest in reading himself. He will sit for long periods of time just looking thru books. He can read sight words and cvc words. I don’t want to push or discourage but I know he can do it. This mama is stuck and frustrated.

    I would love to win this! I plan to homeschool when my boys get older (playing around with preschool some now) but my 11yo sister has always struggled with reading & now has been put on medication to help her focus. I would love to be able to help her over the summer & get her off those pills.

    I attended all Kirsten Eckenwiler’s sessions at the NCHE conference (the past two years). I would purchase this program if money was not an issue. I implement a lot of her strategies in my son’s teaching.

    My daughter is severely dyslexic. She has learned to read, and does it very well considering a year ago, she couldn’t identify all of the letters of the alphabet. We had her professionally evaluated and we are teaching her accordingly – we use AAS for instance, which works amazingly for her. This kit would be amazing in helping us keep her on track and keeping on top of her problems. Thank you and God bless!

I don’t know if I have a great chance, since I’m not on Twitter or Facebook:(, but I have my fingers crossed anyway! I think the assessments/diagnostics are what excite me the most!!!
