Stressed and Unstressed Syllable Sorts

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

These FREE Stressed and Unstressed Syllable Sorts will take the stress out of teaching syllable stress. {See what I did there?}

Before using these, be sure to check read my blog post or watch the video on Unpacking Stress & Schwa on teaching stress!

One of the things about the English language is that it is rhythmic. Some syllables or words are stressed more than others, while other syllables are unstressed. In other words, we don’t stress every syllable equally. It would sound robotic and silly if we did.

Stressed and Unstressed Syllables

Stressed syllables are usually held a little longer. We often say them louder than the other syllables. We usually have more inflection in our voice with stressed syllables, too. This means our voices tend to go up a bit more to emphasize the stressed syllables.

Unstressed syllables tend to be quicker. We also tend to say them a bit quieter and the pitch of our voice drops. Remember that schwa shows up in many unstressed syllables within longer words.

Stressed and Unstressed Syllable Sorts

Use these sorts to help learners practice listening for stressed and unstressed syllables in 2-syllable words. There are two FREE sorts included in this file.

Learners will cut and paste the words into the correct columns: either Stress on the 1st Syllable or Stress on the 2nd Syllable. If learners would rather write the words in the columns, that could be an option, too.
