The “Power” of Sorting

Teaching kids to sort really does pack a punch! Words Their Way for PreK-K by Johnston et. al says it this way:

The human mind works by using a compare-and-contrast categorization system to develop concepts and establish relationships between concepts. Through comparing and contrasting objects and their features or attributes, children are able to create groups or categories. This process is the foundation of critital thinking.” ~p. 24

And as learners talk about how they sorted things, they also develop oral language skills and vocabulary that will serve them well throughout life.

Snowman Sorting Cards

27 FREE color cards are included in this download. Learners can use these cards to sort the snowman by different features.

You can do a closed sort where you tell learners HOW to sort the snowmen. Some examples may include:

• number of body parts {or snowballs}
• wearing/not wearing a hat {as seen above}
• wearing/not wearing a scarf
• has buttons/no buttons
• has arms/no arms
• has coal for a mouth/smiley face {no coal}
• looking to the left/looking to the right

Closed sorts work best for younger learners or learners who are struggling with the concept of sorting.

Older learners or learners with more experience sorting may like doing an open sort with a partner.

In an open sort, the categories or the rules by which the person is sorting is not revealed ahead of time. After the snowmen are sorting, the other person must look at the cards, examine how they are grouped, then infer what the category must have been.

In an open sort, it’s important to explain to learners that they should be sorting the cards based on the appearance of the snowmen, not an opinion of the snowmen. For example, sorting by “These snowmen are wearing my favorite colors and these are not,” is based on opinions, not facts. This would be very difficult for a partner to guess the categories.
