FREE Short Vowel Puzzles

These free puzzles can be used to practice reading or spelling short vowel CCVC or CVCC words. {Note: C stands for consonant. V stands for vowel.} See the image below for a few sample puzzle pieces.

To use these puzzles to practice READING words:

  • Place all the word puzzle pieces out first.
  • Learners read each short vowel word.
  • Then, give them the picture pieces to match to the words.

To use these puzzles to practice SPELLING words:

  • Place all the picture puzzle pieces out first.
  • Learners name and spell each picture.
  • Learners can spell the words out loud or write them down.
  • Then, give your learners all the pieces {words and pictures} and have them match them up.

Before you set your learners free to do these on their own, be sure they have mastered this phonics and spelling pattern! There’s nothing more frustrating for a learner than to be given a task that they’re not able to do yet.

I loved the first set! Thanks for making these! The link gives me an error message today and says ‘not found’. I tried it on two browsers. I’ll try again after summer school! Thank you!

The download is not for the puzzle advertised. You talk about a puzzle containing blends and digraphs and show pictures of a puzzle with bath, duck and rock in it. But the puzzle you download is simple cvc words only. Please send me the correct puzzle. Thanks

Thank you for this puzzle! I know the kids will enjoy it. I saw the CVCe puzzle and was wondering if it too has a link to download?

Love the puzzles, but the teal button isn’t the CVCe puzzles.
