Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared with you three free lessons for short a word families from Unit 1 of my Learn to Read curriculum:
1- the AT family
2- the AD family
3- the AN family
Today, I’m sharing some freebies from the 4th and final short a unit. {Be on the lookout for the short o bundle pack next week!!} My short a bundle pack has a reader and activities for the three short a word families plus sight word review activities and more short a activities!
*The free download sample from this lesson can be found towards the end of this post. Just click on the teal, oval button.

FREE Short a Word Families Reader & Activities
The reader included in this free download has review sight words and the three short a word family words (-at, -ad, -an) from lessons 1-3 of Learn to Read. To create a book, print front and back short ways on cardstock and use an long-armed stapler. You can read about assembling the books in more detail here.
Even though this lesson is more of a review, it still features two new sight words: with and away. My Kindergartner loves the Rainbow Roll & Write pages.
The Roll, Read, and Find is a great way to review the short a word families, sight words, and handwriting! That’s bang for your buck right there!
Also included in this free download is this fun Just Swap 1! spelling game. We use our letter spelling tiles {printable spelling tiles can be found in the bundle pack} to spell the words on the board.
In order to spell the next word on the board, kids just need to swap 1 letter out. This is GREAT for getting kids to really listen for the sounds in words {phonemic awareness}. The bundle pack has a Just Swap 1 game board for other short a words, too!
Extra Activities from Lesson 4
The following activities are a portion of the ones found only in my bundle pack for Unit 1 of Learn to Read.
There are several short a word family review activities. These are clip cards to help kids really zone in on those short a word family chunks for AT, AD, and AN.
Also included are sight word review activities, like this sight word shapes page
and sight word stamp and spell page. Love that these are no prep! Just pull out the letter stamps and go!
The short a review games were some of my daughter’s favorites. There’s Climb & Slide. Look familiar? 😉
WORDO was also a favorite that we played several times. It’s played just like BINGO. I love how it got her sounding out those CVC short a words! This one can be played with your child or kids can play each other. The bundle pack has 6 ready-made WORDO boards and 6 editable boards, so you can create your own!

Great post! Thank you for sharing. I have included it in a list of short a activities on my blog section. Love it!
The green oval didn’t work. It takes me to a motor home selling specialist page.
Strange! The PDF worked when I tested it. Have you tried again using a different browser?
