By thisreadingmama 19 Comments

We did it!  We’re on the final lesson of Reading the Alphabet! Today, the focus is Reading the Alphabet UG Word Family.

If you’re wondering what comes next, check out our Learn to Read curriculum, which piggybacks off of Reading the Alphabet in terms of phonics skills and sight words. You can also snag the free word family books from Learn to Read.

Reading the Alphabet UG Word Family - This Reading Mama

*Keep scrolling until the end of this post to grab the free version of Reading the Alphabet UG Word Family.

You can purchase our updated Reading the Alphabet Bundle Pack, stream-lined for easy downloading! It also features TONS of bonus material that you can’t find in this free version!

Reading the Alphabet UG Word Family Activities

Lesson 31 focuses on learning words in the -UG family with a fun emergent reader! It also features letter and sight word review activities. The zip file {at the end of this post} also has a 5-day lesson outline to guide you through what we did each day.

Before reading through the new UG emergent reader, we did a few UG family activities, like

UG Family Word Puzzles | This Reading Mama

UG puzzles

UG Family onset and rime matching | This Reading Mama

UG Pocket Chart Matching

FREE UG Emergent Reader | This Reading Mama

On the first read through, I left the pocket chart words up as a reference. We looked for the UG words in the text and he circled each one he found. Then we read the text together. On subsequent days, I turned more of the reading over to him.

Spelling CVC Words with Bottle Caps | This Reading Mama

We also used our bottle caps to spell AT, OT, IG, ET, and UG words. I spelled them incorrectly at first and he had to fix the mistake and make it right. He loves this activity!

Roll-A-Rhyme activity | This Reading Mama

His favorite activities in these review weeks are always the Roll-A-Rhyme and Roll an UG Word. He tries to see how hard he can throw these cubes. The lovely thing about them is that they are so soft and won’t hurt anything {or anybody}.

Bug on a Rug Craft | This Reading MamaThis week, he created a “rug” by gluing together two pieces of construction paper. He decorated a bug on another piece of paper, cut it out, and then we glued down the words in the right order.  This craft serves many literacy purposes and has to if it wants to survive in this house {I really don’t like doing crafts}: fine motor, print awareness, review of phonics skills, and review of sight words.

sight word mazes for preschoolers | This Reading Mama

He worked the sight word mazes from his Handwriting Notebook. As you can see, he enjoys re-doing the ones from previous weeks, too.

Writing Sight Words with Color Wonder Markers | This Reading MamaMy favorite of the week was finding this after I left him to tend to NSis. He not only wrote his review words, but wrote many other words he’s learned through Reading the Alphabet!

I’m excited to start your reading the alphabet series next week with my 4 1/2 year old. My 3 year old might be able to do a few things too. Can’t wait for my husband to install my new cork board so I have a place for my hanging charts 🙂

After we finish up -ug……will there be a second level that goes a little deeper?

We love your program such much and have had great success. I love how each book builds from the previous one. My daughter has so much confidence through your program. She is always asking me to print more books and loves the stamping education cube games. Thank you so much! I always refer friends to your site.

Hi, I have used your entire curriculum this last year and haved loved it. My now 4 year old is starting to read, and I have started my 2.5 year old on your curriculum. For some reason, I am unable to download your last lesson plan, the UG family word group. Any chance the file link is broken?

Hi Becky. Thanks a lot for your HUGE work! I am really so impressed because I know how it is hard to FINISH this project. Accept my deep respect. I have 3 kids. My daughters are 10 and 14 right now. They began to read at their 3. I used Hooked on Phonics program. It took about 2 years to finish all 5 steps. Now they are very successful at school and really love to read. My girls could read English fluently before their kindergarten. During their kindergarten year they learned to read French and Russian. At their 6 (before grade 1) they read and understood English, French and Russian. I cannot do it with my son. Even only one language. He is 5. He has a lot of struggle with reading. I am too :)) with his “reading”. Hooked on Phonics program does not work with him. I will try your awesome program next week.
I was so lucky to “meet” you 🙂 and I am pretty sure your program will work! Thank you very much!

Thank You so much for sharing this AMAZING program for free. I am a former preschool teacher of 20 years but decided to stay home 7 years ago when my 1st grandchild was born, I am an avid reader & couldnt wait for my grandkids to learn to read, your program has been a great addition to our Nene(that is what they call me) school. I pray that God blesses you as much as you have blessed those of us using your program.
