Reading the Alphabet: Letter S {Lesson 29}

By thisreadingmama 1 Comment

Reading the Alphabet Letter S is finally here! See all the lessons in our free preschool curriculum, Reading the Alphabet.

*I know the letter s is more common that some of the letters we’ve already done. One big reason I waited is because s is a hard letter to write. And although this isn’t a handwriting curriculum, I wanted preschoolers to have more success in the handwriting activities with letter s.

Reading the Alphabet Letter S Activities

Here are a few photos of our letter s week. Enjoy!

He still enjoys coloring his black and white emergent reader.

We also built the emergent reader sentences on the pocket chart. Because he did not want to do the pocket chart activity, I asked him to read the story to me while I built the sentences. {I did sneak in some wrong words here and there to see if he was paying attention!}

We tried the poke page again {as a poke page} and here are the results! Crazy boy!

I had been pre-cutting all of the pictures for the Cut and Paste a Rhyme activity and this week, he told me very politely that he could handle it himself. So, he did.

He really enjoyed the syllable racing game.  I placed 1-3 on the wall of our hallway.

 I went through all the picture cards from lessons 1-29 and pulled out picture cards that had either 1, 2, or 3 syllables. I showed him the card, he counted the syllables, then ran {or hopped, etc} to tag the number on the wall.

He found the word down with the transparent counters instead of circling them this week.

I was very impressed that this week, he caught on to how to write a number sentence. He really likes this activity.  It’s not in the lesson plans, but I take the How Many Submarines to another level by having him write the number sentence to go along with the problems.

He really enjoys making up his own stories and making me solve the problems. My correct answer is usually met with a, “Good job, mommy! You got it right!” Love it.
