It’s here! It’s here! We’ve reached Unit 2 of Phonics by The Book! If you’re new to Phonics by The Book, welcome!
Before I get to far into posting about Lesson 1, I wanted to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Masaru of Christian Clip Arts. His website it absolutely amazing, as he is a gifted artist who wants to freely bless others with it! Thank you, Masaru, for working so hard to get the clip art ready for these readers. 🙂
Unit 2, Lesson 1 focuses on the Israelites as they learned to trust God in the middle of the desert. The phonics skill is the Long a_e pattern.
In the download, you’ll find my:
- God Was on Their Side reader (with a focus on a_e words)
-
printables & activities for reinforcing a_e words
-
printables & activities to coincide with sight words (most are from Fry’s first 100 Sight Word & Pre-Primer/Primer lists)
-
writing ideas & prompts
-
focal Bible Verse with activities
-
5-Day Lesson Outline that gives a plan for spacing out the activities over the week
Many of the activities are the same as the ones from Unit 1, but I’ve changed up a few of them per ALuv’s request. 🙂
This new unit still contains:
a word sort, with words chosen mostly from the reader &
various games and activities to reinforce the phonics skill and sight words.
But there are some new activities, such as:
Spin a Pattern
We used a paper clip for a spinner
The idea is you spin one of the a_e patterns, then write a word from the sort with that pattern on your game board.
The first person to write 5 of one of the patterns is declared the winner. (He won, of course!)
A-“maze”-ing Sight Words
His biggest request was that I start making mazes. It took me quite some time to figure out how to do this, but I finally did! He LOVED it. For this activity, the child draws his way through the maze, then goes back and reads the words on the path.
I Spy Sight Words-locate and write the 10 words hidden in the picture
Go Fish (with Sight Words)-these are the five words I chose from the text. You may want to pick your own.

Enjoy!

[…] you’re unsure how to implement any of these activities, the posts from Unit 1, Lesson 1 and Unit 2, Lesson 1 will probably be most helpful. But if you’ve been using these lessons with your child, the […]

Hooray for Unit 2!
And than you so much for your shout. It reaches all the way to Canada and to the world!!
A correction of my typo….
Incorrect: than
Correct: thank
Sorry 🙂
You’re so welcome! We’re working thru the Jericho reader this week. I may have more work for you soon. ;). Also, let me know my next assignment!
Man if I’d known about his stuff 2 years ago I wouldn’t have already of drawn 2/3 of the Old Testament. They are great stuff, as is your lessons.
I know. Isn’t his clip art AMAZING?!? I’m so glad God found it for me. The last thing I wanted was to be limited in my freedom to write as I felt God had called me to do for each story because there was no clip art out there. Praise God for His body. We all work together to glorify Him.
Yes, your next assignment is coming soon!! 😉 but I have something to show you before that. It should be ready in a couple of days. Thanks for your patience.
By the way, I love the idea of your A-”maze”-ing Sight Words so much. The order of the words in a sentence makes the right path to the goal, right? No wonder your kid loves it. Great idea!
Cool. Can’t wait to see it. The order through the path doesn’t make a sentence, but that’s an awesome idea for the next few lessons!
