Last week was spent in review of Lessons 1-5 of my Phonics by The Book Curriculum: Unit 1.

PHONICS/BIBLE READERS: Order by The Book-sequencing

Each day, we re-read one of the readers (5 readers in all); then did an Order by The Book activity with each reader.  All 5 readers from Lessons 1-5 are included in this download.

He cut apart the sentences from each text and put them in order.

Then, he glued them down to paper.

SHORT VOWEL REVIEW SORT: I used words from the past 5 sorts to review all five short vowels.  Note: This sort is different from the rest.  There are more words AND the child is not sorting by word family, but by vowel sound.

Day 1:

Introduce, model, shuffle, and he sorts with support-just like we did in Lessons 1-5

Day 2:

We played Sort, Say, & Score; which I explained in Lesson 5.  This is quickly becoming one of his favorite word study games.

This week I let ALuv keep the score, so he had to make sure I didn’t make any “mistakes”.  It was also a great way to integrate some tally mark making in for him!

Day 3: Little Words

As a review, I pulled out letters from the Little Words activities we did in Lessons 1-5 and let him create the little words.

He recorded them as he created them.  I gave him suggestions as needed.  Just to be clear, I told him that all the letters combined DID NOT spell one word, as was the case in Lessons 1-5.

Day 4: Written Sort

This is very similar to a blind sort, but as you call out the words, the child writes them in the correct column (without looking at the words); similar to a spelling test.

Day 5: Re-sort words and glue them down to paper.

We stuck the paper in his Phonics by The Book notebook.

SIGHT WORDS:

Day 1: Word-Wac-Woe

I pulled from all the sight words introduced in Lessons 1-5 and we played twice.  Each time, we pulled 16 words to play with.  This way, we reviewed 32 words.  For instructions on how to play Word-Wac-Woe, visit Lesson 1.

Day 2: ABC Order

I pulled 10 words from the word cards in Word-Wac-Woe; he put them in ABC order on our pocket chart,

then read each word aloud.  (If you want to integrate some writing, you could have your child record his or her ABC order.)

Day 3: Roll & Write a Sight Word

I did an entire post on how to play this game.  It’s so simple, yet fun.

Once again, I used the word cards from Word-Wac-Woe and we played twice (allowing us to review 20 words).

Day 4: He picked 5 words and he wrote 5 sentences with those words. (no picture…sorry)

Day 5: Unscramble the Sight Words

Once again, I used my sight words from Word-Wac-Woe.  I also used my sentence strip letters from this post, but I also found some letters online that you can cut apart and use in the same manner from this website.

WRITING:

I didn’t have a lot of time to think of writing prompts this week due to getting last minute preparations done for baby #4…sorry!  Maybe you will.  But here’s an example of Day 5’s writing-he used one of the readers to help him spell some of his words.  You might also ask your child to draw/write about his or her favorite Bible character from the stories so far and why.

BIBLE VERSE: Ask your child to recite each day (from memory) the verse from Lessons 1-5.  The verses are listed on the Lesson Outline.

Becky! Wow I have been working on doing this very same thing but for adults! I surely can adapt some of this as they are absolute beginners. But Also teach kids in our foundation. This was on the back burner for them but youve done it! I am also working on continuation of the stories by using the stories to teach basic English starting with Joseph. Thanks for what you do.
