Letter H Book List

These books contain these words that begin with H: hen, hungry, house, hermit crab, happy, Harold, hat, harbor, & hands. Although I am including them in a Letter H book list, these are fantastic reads ANY time! Note: some of these books are currently out of print {but shouldn’t be, in my opinion}, but you can still purchase them through certain sellers or find them at the library.

The Red Hen by Rebecca Emberley is a cute book that takes the classic Little Red Hen {which my kids also love} and twists it just a bit. The frog is probably my kids’ favorite, as his response is “Bribbit,” which means, “Not I!”

The Hungry Thing by Jan Slepian is a great rhyming book that gets kids getting what the hungry thing wants to eat! A super fun way to get kids to play with sounds in words.

A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle is a great book for SO many reasons. Eric Carle has an amazing way with naturally weaving in figurative language, vocabulary, learning objectives, and childhood themes without compromising the story line. This book is no exception. My favorite phrase from the entire book is, “creaked a crusty coral.”

If You’re Happy and You Know it by Jane Cabrera has been a favorite of my kids. Stomp, clap, and jump with the animals. If you’ve got an indoor kind of day, this is a great one to pull out and release some energy!

Hungry Hen by Richard Waring has the classic characters: a hen and a fox. And it has the classic story line of a fox who wants to eat the hen. But that’s about all that’s predictable in this book! With a hen who eats and eats and eats, what could she do to the fox? The end has a twist that kids won’t see coming.

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson is one that I’d always heard about, but never actually sat down and read…until my 4th child came along. She found it one day on a bookshelf in the schoolroom and I have officially read it, cover to cover, about 50 times. 🙂 This book is captivating for kids as Harold draws with his imagination to return home. {So, was it a dream or not? A great question for older kids.}

Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton is absolutely, without a doubt, one of the favorites in our house. Kids will ask for it AGAIN and AGAIN. It’s short enough to hold the attention of a busy tot or preschooler. And the dressing mistakes the turkey makes will get kids giggling.

The Napping House by Audrey Wood is another favorite started by MY mother. The predictable text is perfect for kids to “read” along and the illustrations are out of this world! Like Eric Carle, Audrey Wood has such way with words, using many different synonyms for the word napping.

If you have a child who loves transportation, then Harbor by Donald Crews is sure to please! Tucked into the simple book is TONS of vocabulary about the harbor and the different kinds of vessels that are found there. We have it as a big book, which makes it even more fun to read.

My Hands by Aliki is just one of several books in Level 1 of Let’s Read and Find Out Science series about the body. The text is simple and easy to understand. This series is one of our favorite science series and has three levels of teaching. Level 1 is perfect for preschool and Kindergarten.

Building a House by Byron Barton uses simple text and clear, simple images to show the process of house building from the ground up. For kids fascinated with construction {and even those that aren’t} it is sure to please.
