I love to plan activities that cover more than one objective. ALuv has been working on digraphs and blends for the last few weeks, so I thought I’d throw some short vowel review in the mix to keep these patterns fresh in his mind. I developed these printables to review his short vowels AND sight words at the same time.
I use Words Their Way‘s sorts as part of his spelling/phonics work, so I made up a couple of sorts and you can download them here. There are directions with the download to help you do this activity with your child/students.
THE FIRST SORT: reviews the short a & i vowels as well as the sight words and, big, can, dad, has, his, in, is, it, that, & what.
First ALuv read & sorted all the words a or i
Then he read back through all the words to see if he could find the “oddball” (the one word whose vowel made a different sound- what).
THE SECOND SORT: reviews the short e, o, & u vowels and the sight words but, dog, get, help, not, off, put, red, stop, up, & yes.
Reading back through the words to find the “oddball” word.

One of the students I tutor is working on differentiating vowel sounds and I couldn’t find my Words Their Way book. Argh! This is just what I needed to find. Thank you SO much for sharing a free download!
SO glad I could help! 😉 Have you ever heard of Spelling Mechanics Homeschool Word Study? It’s similar to WTW. I skimmed through some of the curriculum and I like what I’ve seen thus far.
Trying to download it for the Bob Book Set 4 lesson plan and the link no longer works? Any other resources you would recommend for the short a and e? Thank you
I will try and fix this download when I return home.
I couldn’t get the short vowel/sight word sort to download. Similar to Bob set – it says link doesn’t exist anymore. Can you please help?
Thank you!
The link has been fixed. Thanks for letting me know. 🙂
