Shamrock Sight Word Game - Word Bump from This Reading Mama*This post contains affiliate links. To learn more about this, please read my full disclosure policy.

This week, my boys played our new Shamrock-themed Sight Word Game {called Word Bump!}. If you are new to Word Bump!, it’s a game I concocted for working on writing our sight words in a fun way {plus, there’s some math mixed in}. It sure beats writing each sight word five times! You can read a little more about Word Bump! here or here. There are also directions in the free printable pack {download link at the end of this post}.

Shamrock Word Bump Spelling List for Each Child | This Reading MamaMy 2nd grader and 5 year old enjoy playing this game together. Before playing, I wrote out a word list for each child. My 2nd grader worked on his sight words and my 5 year old worked on his words. That’s one of the cool things about this game: both kids can play with separate word lists. While we used sight words, you can also play with phonics word lists that you’re working on for the week. For example, I could have used short vowel words with my 5 year old and two-syllable words we’ve been working on from Words their Way and All About Reading with my eldest.

Sight Word Game in Action!

erasing sight word for bump gameWe slide our page into a plastic sleeve protector {if you teach in any capacity, these are a true life saver!} and each child chooses a different colored dry erase marker. Each takes a turn rolling 2 dice {in the pack, you’ll find game boards for 1 die, 2 dice, or 3 dice}, adding up the total, and writing a word from their word list on the game board. My youngest son takes such pleasure in erasing {bumping} my oldest son’s words!

working on handwriting tooI also love the way this game integrates some handwriting, as I have been encouraging my youngest son to pay attention to uppercase versus lowercase usage. Originally, he wrote thAt. I asked him to go back and erase it to write a lowercase a instead.
