Foil Wrapped Christmas Tree Ornaments

Foil Wrapped Christmas Tree Ornaments {This Reading Mama}

I’ll be the first to admit it: I have a strong dislike for crafts!  Maybe it comes from the whole first child being a perfectionist thing, but crafts get under my skin…except when the craft meets another objective; say, writing or reading.  Then it’s much easier for me to stomach. 😉

Earlier this week, my three eldest kids (ages 2, 4, and 7) created some foil wrapped Christmas tree ornaments.  This craft worked in some fine motor skills; perfect for all three of my kiddos!

Materials:

  • foil (not too heavy duty)
  • foam-color doesn’t matter because it will be wrapped in foil
  • templates (free to download HERE)
  • cardstock
  • different colored Sharpies
  • hole puncher (I have a medium-duty one)
  • yarn or string
  • glue
  • scissors
  • optional: smock, paint brush, wax paper or newspaper, Christmas music in the background

How to Make Foil Wrapped Ornaments:

1. Print the templates onto cardstock.  Cut out the templates you’d like to use.  The templates with the straight lines are the easiest to use for younger children.  (Template downloads are in the “material” section above.)

2. Trace the templates onto foam

3. “Paint” one side of the foam ornament with glue (a glue stick will also work, but my kids enjoy “painting”)

4. Cut out strips on foil and lay across the top, covering the entire foam ornament

5. Bend the excess foil around the back and glue down (don’t allow for too much excess)

6. Let the glue dry for a good 20 minutes (read a Christmas book or dance to your background music while you wait)

7. Use the Sharpies and create designs on the ornament.

8. Hole-punch at the top and place a piece of yarn or string through.  Tie off the string to create a loop.

9. Hang it on the tree and enjoy all season {and the next, too}!

10.  I don’t really have a 10th step.  I just couldn’t bear the thought of ending at 9.  It goes back to the firstborn thing.
