What is a Diphthong?
In a vowel diphthong {pronounced diff-thong}, your mouth moves or glides from one vowel sound to the next. For example, in the word boy, your mouth pronounces the o and then glides to the y. See the image below.

Diphthong Puzzles
These free puzzles can be used to practice reading or spelling words with diphthongs.
To use these puzzles to practice READING words:
- Place all the word puzzle pieces out first.
- Learners read each word.
- Then, give learners the picture pieces to match the words.

To use these puzzles to practice SPELLING words:
- Place all the picture puzzle pieces out first.
- Learners name and spell each picture.
- Learners can spell the words out loud or write them down.
- Then, give your learners all the pieces {words and pictures} and have them match them up.
Before you set your learners free to do these on their own, be sure they have mastered this phonics and spelling pattern! There’s nothing more frustrating for a learner than to be given a task that they’re not able to do with success.
