Teaching my kids cursive handwriting has always been a big must in my book.

First off, studies have shown that cursive handwriting is wonderful for struggling writers {see links below.}

But secondly, how in the world are our kids going to be able to read older and important original documents, like the Declaration of Independence, if they can’t even read cursive handwriting? Yes, there are digital copies, but digital resources can always be changed.

If you want to dive deeper into the science behind cursive handwriting, Jackie of Deep Roots at Home has two great articles about cursive handwriting and so does Heather of Growing Kids Hands-On.

If you’re wanting to teach cursive handwriting, I think it’s super helpful to teach the letters in groups based on the first stroke.

For example, letters like l, b, e, and t start with a little curve up:

While capital letters like N, M, and U start with a little curve over:

Teaching cursive handwriting in groups like this can help our learners see that handwriting isn’t as daunting as they may think. So many letters are formed in similar ways!

You’ll find FOUR handwriting charts in the free download.

  • TWO charts just have the letters {for both uppercase and lowercase letters} and can serve as a reminder
  • TWO charts have letters that learners can trace {again, for both upper- and lowercase}, which would be great to make reusable by slipping into a dry erase pocket and using a dry erase marker to trace over
