Rhyming and Reading

The ability to rhyme is not technically a skill learners must have to read, but I think it is still an important skill to work on with young kids. Rhyming is one of the easiest ways to play with sounds in words, and the ability to play with the individual sounds in words IS important for reading.

And if a young child isn’t able to recognize or play with rhymes {even after much exposure}, it can be one of the first indicators that your child may have a reading difference.

Let’s combine the Bible with some rhyming fun!

Bible Rhyming Cards

18 pairs of rhymes are included in this FREE pack. I would recommend printing onto cardstock and laminating if plan to use the cards for a memory matching game or if you need to reuse the cards.

Each card has the word at the bottom, but this ISN’T for your child to read. It’s simply there to help you identify the picture. Its’ a-okay if you talk about the letters in the words with your child, but do not expect your child to read the words just yet.

Bible Rhyming Cards example - boat-coat

Each rhyming pair of cards has AT LEAST one picture that relates to a Bible story/passage from the Old or New Testaments. For example, there are several stories of Jesus’s disciples in boats in the New Testament. Genesis tells us the story of Joseph’s coat given to him by his father, Jacob.

I would encourage you to challenge yourself or your child to think of the Bible stories the pictures could relate to as you play with the rhyming word cards, as I’ve done above with boat and coat.
