We’ve been working through the Words Their Way long i (i_e) word sort over the last couple of weeks on our “lite” summer school schedule.
Since ALuv really enjoys playing games with dice (and because the word dice has the i_e pattern), I created three dice games for him to review the i_e pattern.
ALuv enjoyed each one. Here are some snapshots of him in action:
Twice as Nice game (2-4 players)
Roll the two dice. If the two words do not share the same rime (they don’t rhyme), players move one space. If the two words share the same rime (they rhyme), players move two spaces.
Hide the Word! (2-4 players)
Cut out the gameboard per directions on the download. Roll two dice, add the sums, then read and hide (cover) the long i word, which corresponds to the number rolled. For example, if you roll an 8, you read the word beside the number 8 (white in the picture above) and then cover it with the flap. The first person who hides all his words is the winner.
Roll & Write a Sentence (independent work)
Roll the two dice. Add the sums, then write the word into the missing blanks to spell a silly sentence using several long i words. (This activity should look familiar if you’ve used any of my free Phonics by The Book curriculum.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD ALL THESE GAMES FOR FREE HERE.
Before doing the WTW word sort & these activities with ALuv, we spent a week working through this Long i packet.
