I am very excited to join many others bloggers this month for my first ever virtual book club! The author for February? Why, Dr. Seuss, of course!
I love Dr. Seuss books…and so do my kids. ONE of my many favorites has got to be There’s a Wocket in my Pocket. I love all the silly words and creatures sprinkled on every page. And this books lends itself naturally to a rhyming scavenger hunt around the house. What fun!
Before reading the book, we talked about real and silly words and I read a few of the silly words aloud like wocket, zelf, and yeps. After a good laugh, we read the book aloud, looking for the silly words and silly creatures. We also talked about how much rhyming we could hear in the story.
After reading, I asked NJoy (currently 4 years old) to draw some silly creatures. He jumped right in, drawing all kinds of crazy looking things.
Once they were cut out, I hid them around the house. I gave him partial rhyming clues to help him find them. {He had to fill in the rest of rhyme and find the creature.}
“Oh no! There’s a ziano on the ______!” or
“There’s a soven in the _______!”
He had such a blast doing this! He and his brother played this game for the rest of the day {quite literally} here and there. It was really fun to observe!
