Although word sorts are the heartbeat of word study, GAMES and FUN WORD ACTIVITIES can and should accompany the word patterns being studied.
Examples of FUN with WORD PATTERNS:
1. Games
Sort, Say, Score!, as described in this post
Word-Wac-Woe (a variation of this sight word game)- Both players write 9 words the sort on their “board”
Place head words at top of work space. Shuffle rest of word study word cards and them place face-down in a pile. Players take turns picking off the top card, reading it, sorting it, then crossing it off his board (if he has the word). First player to cross off all his words is declared the winner.
2. Themed Sorts
Halloween Sort
Shamrock Sorting (sound/picture sort)
3. Word Manipulation
Making Words – I have a variation here and in each of my Phonics by The Book lessons (I call it “Little Words“…see the picture above).
