Our A_E Week in Action

I was so excited that ALuv did as well as he did with the A_E Pattern Pack I made for him!  Here are some “action” shots of him as he worked this past week:

Day 1: Introducing the Sort

He cut out the words, placed the head words at the top and he sorted  them visually by these patterns: a or a_e.  I quickly read through each word for the purpose of building vocabulary (pane, vane, etc.).  I used the pictures from the picture/word matching, pp. 4-5 of download, to demonstrate the meaning of some of the words.

Then, we read through the words again and this time I over-emphasized the a sound in each word.  I asked him if he noticed anything about the sound of the a in each column.  He discovered that every time there was an e at the end, the a said its name.  Good discovery!

I showed him how each short a word had a partner word with an e on the end and he also matched them up this way.

Day 2: Matching Pictures to Words

We re-sorted the words from the sort (a vs. a_e), revisiting the patterns and the a sound first.

Day 3: Flip the Word Activity

We re-sorted the words from the sort by matching up the short a word to the corresponding long a word.

ALuv has never enjoyed drawing for some reason.  He’d rather write 10 pages before drawing the first picture.  As soon as I told him this would be a part of the activity, he began whining.

So, I printed off the word matching pictures (pp. 4-5 of download) in black and white and he cut out the ones he needed and pasted them onto the other side of the flip chart.  No biggie.  (Sorry the picture is a bit on the blurry side.)

After it was complete, I flipped to a word,

he read it and found the matching picture.  We did this several times.

Day 4: Fill in the Sentence

Before he worked on his sheet, we use the flip a word chart to review reading a few short a and long a words, then he completed the sentences.

a_e Write the Word (I used this as an assessment tool-just to gauge where his understanding was of the a_e pattern; so he didn’t have any help.)

He did AMAZINGLY well!! Yay!
