Our Learning the Alphabet packs are ABC printables you can use in a school, tutoring, or home setting to teach letters and their sounds.
My goal with them is hands-on, hands-on, hands-on as you work with young learners. You can read more about how we use all the supplies listed for Learning the Alphabet here.

Included in this list below are the teaching supplies we use for Learning the Alphabet. These are also staples in our home that we use on a regular basis. If you don’t have the money to invest in all of them right away, pick and choose what you think your student would enjoy. Some of these teaching supplies also make GREAT birthday or Christmas gifts for kids!
Teaching Supplies for Learning the Alphabet
We LOVE our Photo Stacking Blocks. Really, we do. These have been a great investment. Even my 3rd grader still uses them for various activities! {Used for Learning the Alphabet activities: Roll and Race! and Roll a Letter Sound.}
Maped Koopy Spring Scissors– GREAT for beginners and they “transform” to work as normal scissors as the child ages. Love, love, love these! So much so, that we have two pair. {Used for Learning the Alphabet activities: Cut & Paste Letter Sounds and Letter Puzzles.}
I highly recommend washable markers when teaching young children. I am particularly fond of the Pip-Squeaks markers because they are skinnier and do not foster the fisted grip as much as the fat markers do. {Used coloring the black and white pages of Learning the Alphabet.}
Do-a-Dot Markers are also a favorite at our house. {Used for Learning the Alphabet activities: Alphabet Do-a-Dot and Cover the Numbers 1-10.} Instead of the Do-a-Dot paint, we like to also use Power Magnets, counters, pom-poms, or circle stickers.
We have a Standard Pocket Chart and tabletop pocket chart. We have used our tabletop pocket chart the most for Learning the Alphabet because it’s smaller and can go anywhere. Plus, the alphabet picture cards from the Bonus Material fit nicely inside it. {Used for Learning the Alphabet activities: Number Cards 1-10 and Letter, Picture and Word Cards from Bonus Material.}
Playdough. Of course, you can make your own, but we have so much of the store-bought from birthdays and Christmas that we mostly use it. I do have a homemade playdough recipe in this post. {Used for Learning the Alphabet activity: Alphabet Playdough Mats. You can also use it to form playdough leters over the block letter pages or tracing pages.}
Dry erase markers work well when you laminate or use plastic sleeve protectors. I really like the smaller markers, but Crayola also makes washable dry erase markers.
These alphabet stamps by Melissa & Doug work well as you adapt any of the activities. Melissa & Doug’s alphabet stickers are also fun to use to change up the Do-a-Dot pages or coloring pages.
Preparing the Activities
To prep the activities:
- I like to print most of my activities onto cardstock. This helps to make them less flimsy or apt to tear, especially when using the Do-a-Dot paint. I do print the books onto regular copy paper.
- I use plastic sleeve protectors instead of laminating things when I can.
- When you want to laminate things, I HIGHLY recommend this Scotch laminator. I’ve had mine for a few years now and dropped it from the tip-top of a bookshelf the other day and was sure it was broken. But it still works like a champ! 🙂
