Help Your Child Get Ready for Kindergarten
Before I share too much about this series, let me dispel a few common myths about getting ready for Kindergarten and add a few positive comments.
Kindergarten Prep DOES NOT mean…
- you have to do worksheets all day long with your child
- you discount your child’s interests
- you take away play time
- you are required to have formal time of learning
- you focus only on academics {just because you teach your child letters, sounds, and numbers doesn’t mean you neglect their character or social skills}
To me, Kindergarten Prep is first and foremost a MINDSET. It’s being intentional about integrating those learning skills into every day life.
For example…
- “Would you like to wear the blue shorts or the red shorts today?” {colors}
- “Let’s turn left to get the milk.” {left/right, directional words}
- “I see your name {spell letters of name} on this cup. It must belong to you!” {letters and letter concepts}
- “How many stairs do you think we have in our house? Let’s count them as we go down.” {counting, one-to-one correspondence}
- “I like how the illustrator drew the picture sideways on this page. Doesn’t that bear look silly?” {book and print awareness}
Kindergarten concepts do not have to be drilled and killed before Kindergarten. When we ignore our child’s signals and just focus on mastering skills, we can create resistant learners before they even start their first day of school.
But if your child enjoys focused time to sit and learn, by all means GO FOR IT! All four of my own children would beg me to create things for them. It’s one of the main reasons I created Learning the Alphabet and Reading the Alphabet.
