Our Backyard Chicken Coop

It’s time for a tour of our backyard chicken coop.

If you’re like me, you like to see how other people do things. For example, as a homeschooler, I love to see other people’s homeschool rooms. I guess I’m just nosey like that. Hehe.

Well, if you’re nosey like me, I thought I’d share a little about our backyard chicken coop and run.

Just so you know, we currently have 12 backyard chickens…nine adults and three newer ones we’re working to slowly acclimate to the group.

Our Backyard Chicken Coop

Our cute, little red coop was actually a gift from a neighbor who had converted his barn for his chickens and no longer needed it. The coop was just sitting in his yard and he said we could have it…or it would just rot away in his cow pasture. Of course, we didn’t want that to happen!

And what a blessing it was to get the coop for free! My husband brought it over to our backyard and created a base for it to set on.

The coop itself has two roosting bars, plenty of ventilation, and six lay boxes {three on each side that hinge up for easy access}. It locks up nice and securely at night.

My handy husband then created a chicken run that is attached to the chicken coop with little ramp that was hard-clothed in.

The hard cloth is durable and has prevented an predator from getting in. We also dug about a foot out from around the base of the coop and continued with the hard cloth so predators couldn’t dig under the run. If you’re considering saving money by using chicken wire, I would caution you against it as it is not predator proof.

We keep their door open for most of the day, with their feed and water inside the run. The chickens roam in a make-shift fenced in area in our backyard for most of the day. We visit them several times a day, and we always lock them in at night.

Together, the run and the coop look like this. {To the right of the run is our black soldier fly larva box. Chickens love them, and their great for your compost!}
