Letter B Books

Please Bring Balloons by Lindsay Ward is a newer story for us, but one that kids will enjoy hearing over and over. Younger children will enjoy the pictures, while older kids will enjoy the “magical” story line. Moms will love the vocabulary.

Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown {the author of Goodnight Moon} is simply a classic. All of my kids enjoyed the rhyming text, even at a very young age. It’s a great one to read any time, but especially before bedtime.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr. is another classic. No Letter B book list would be complete without it. 🙂 This was one of the first books my young preschoolers could “read” on their own because of the predictable text. I also love how simple the rhyming pattern is.

The Little Mouse and The Red, Ripe Strawberry and the Big, Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood is a FANTASTIC book for teaching kids to infer feelings as the cute, little mouse has such an expressive face. And although the bear isn’t seen, he is VERY much a part of this book.

Boats by Byron Barton has simple texts that features a lot of different kinds of boards including a cruise ship, sailboat, and rowboat. My boys, especially, loved this book as toddlers and preschoolers. The colorful pictures kept their attention and the short text was perfect for their attention span.

How Many Bugs in a Box? by David A. Carter is SUCH a cute counting book. From one to ten, this book will hold the attention, even of those children who “can’t sit still.” My only caution is the flaps. If you have a toddler who loves to tear paper {as does my fourth child}, be careful that you keep it put up high and only bring it out when you read it to him/her. You’ve been warned.

The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton is another great bedtime book and book that features the letter B. I can fondly remember my oldest son asking me read the last page about 10 times in a row every time we’d read it together. We have loved any Sandra Boynton book we’ve gotten our hands on and own many of them.

From Head to Toe by Eric Carle features the letter B indirectly, as the entire book is about the BODY. From head to toe, Eric Carle shares things that animals can do with the refrain, “I can do it.” Kids love that they can move with the book while repeating the refrain.

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon is a story about a bat named Stellaluna who is knocked from her mother. She tries her hardest to fit in with a family of birds, only to discover that she is not a good bird. Although this is a fiction story, there are great life lessons to learn from it and ways that bats and birds are different.

Not a Box by Antoinette Portis reflects the creativity of my kids every time a box arrives at my doorsteps. It’s not always so much what’s IN the box, but that they got a box to play with. 🙂 Such a great book and a fun one for kids to interact with as they exclaim, “It’s NOT a box.”

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen is a great book to read and sing along together, acting out the adventure of a bear hunt. If you have a child who teeters towards being fearful, I think it’s a good idea to prep them ahead of time the first couple of times through the book. {We also love the sing the Bear Hunt song from Greg & Steve.}
